Bathroom and Toilet Feng Shui: Creating a Fresh and Healthy Private Space

Basic Bathroom Feng Shui Knowledge

In traditional home Feng Shui, the bathroom (including toilet and shower) is an area that requires special attention. In Feng Shui, the bathroom belongs to “solitary yin and turbid water,” representing the Five Elements of water and symbolizing a place where waste and moisture are generated. In stark contrast to the kitchen’s “solitary yang and drying fire,” when these two are combined in the center of the house, they cannot form yin-yang harmony—instead creating a water-fire conflict situation that brings double disadvantages.

According to traditional Feng Shui theory, the central point of a house is called the “central palace,” like the human heart. It is the most important part of the entire residence and the primary location affecting family wealth. The toilet is a place for waste elimination—it absolutely must not pollute the most important focal point of the house. Having the toilet located in the central palace easily causes family members to suffer from cardiovascular and other related diseases.

Bathroom Location Taboos

1. Should Not Be in the Southwest or Northeast

The southwest belongs to the Kun trigram, and the northeast belongs to the Gen trigram—both have earth properties. The bathroom’s trigram nature is water. Placing water-element bathrooms in the earth-element southwest and northeast creates the unfavorable interaction of earth overcoming water. Traditional beliefs consider this extremely inauspicious.

2. Should Not Be in the Center of the House

This is the most important point in bathroom Feng Shui. According to the Luoshu positioning, the center belongs to earth, while the bathroom belongs to water. Placing a water-element bathroom in the earth-element center creates the problem of earth overcoming water. Additionally, having the bathroom in the center of the house means water supply and drainage must pass through other rooms, making maintenance very difficult—and if sewage pipes also pass through other rooms, it’s even more troublesome.

3. Should Not Be in the South

The south belongs to the Li trigram, with Five Elements of fire, while the bathroom belongs to water. Placing a water-element bathroom in the fire-element south means the bathroom overcomes the fire element, similar to one’s birth chart conflicting with the year’s Tai Sui (流年太歲). This is also inauspicious. The south is the direction for natural light—if the bathroom occupies this direction, it may affect one’s luck.

4. Should Be Placed in the Inauspicious Direction, Not the Auspicious Direction

In Feng Shui, the bathroom should be positioned in the inauspicious area of the house to suppress negative stars. Conversely, placing the bathroom in an auspicious direction will damage the family’s wealth and the health of residents.

5. The Bathroom Location Should Be Concealed

The bathroom position should not be too conspicuous—it should maintain a certain level of concealment. The bathroom is a place for waste elimination and needs to remain low-key. This ensures the positive energy in the home isn’t drained away.

Bathroom Usage and Layout Taboos

1. The Bathroom Should Not Be Converted into a Bedroom

Some families convert bathrooms into bedrooms to save space, but this violates Feng Shui principles and doesn’t meet environmental health standards. The bathroom is a place of impurity and should be located in an inauspicious direction to suppress negative stars. Converting a bathroom into a bedroom causes people living below to directly bear the impact of上层 wastewater and qi, which is extremely harmful to health.

2. The Bathroom Should Be Kept Clean

In Feng Shui, the bathroom is considered a place generating腐败空氣 (stale air). Keeping the bathroom clean and dry is not only beneficial for health but also ensures the home’s positive energy isn’t contaminated by foul qi. A dirty bathroom leads to declining wealth luck and容易發生意外 (prone to accidents).

3. The Bathroom Should Maintain Air Circulation

The bathroom must have windows, preferably with abundant sunlight and good air circulation. This allows bathroom odors to be expelled more easily, maintaining fresh air. Being completely enclosed without proper ventilation equipment is definitely harmful to family health.

4. The Toilet Direction Should Not Match the House Direction

According to traditional house相位学 (position study) principles, the toilet direction should not match the house direction. For example, if the house main door faces south, when a person sits on the toilet facing south, this violates the taboo of the toilet matching the house direction. It’s said to cause skin infections and boils on family members.

5. The Toilet Should Not Face the Main Door

Having the toilet directly face the main door is a major Feng Shui taboo. This causes good fortune and wealth energy entering from the main door to be directly flushed away by the toilet, leading to financial losses. A solution is to place a screen or cabinet between the toilet and main door for遮挡.

6. The Bathroom Door Should Not Directly Face the Main Door, Corridor, or Kitchen Door

The bathroom door directly facing the main door allows negative qi to directly enter the residence. When the bathroom door faces the kitchen door, it creates a water-fire conflict situation, harmful to family health.

Effects of Bathrooms in Different Directions

According to traditional Feng Shui theory, bathrooms in different positions affect residents differently:

East (Zhen Trigram)

Bathrooms in the east easily induce liver, bronchial diseases, as well as symptoms like体虛 (physical weakness) and中风 (stroke).

Southeast (Xun Trigram)

Bathrooms in the southeast easily cause esophagus, bronchial, nervous system, and gastrointestinal diseases.

South (Li Trigram)

Bathrooms in the south cause heart and liver diseases, as well as infectious diseases.

Southwest (Kun Trigram)

Bathrooms in the southwest easily trigger gynecological, kidney, digestive system, and peritonitis diseases.

West (Dui Trigram)

Bathrooms in the west easily induce oral and respiratory system diseases.

Northwest (Qian Trigram)

Bathrooms in the northwest are most harmful to male heads of household and elderly men, easily inducing head and bone diseases.

North (Kan Trigram)

Bathrooms in the north, because north belongs to water with greatly increased water energy, cause unexpected disasters, easily inducing blood and nervous system diseases.

Northeast (Gen Trigram)

Bathrooms in the northeast trigger rheumatism and skin diseases.

Bathroom Feng Shui Solutions

Method 1: Plant化解

Hang an “opening gourd” (開口的葫芦) on the bathroom drain and place three potted soil-grown foliage plants in the toilet. Gourds have化煞 (countering negative energy) functions in Feng Shui, and foliage plants can absorb moisture and foul qi.

Method 2: Screen Blocking

If possible, add a screen or wardrobe between the bed and bathroom door as blocking. This method has more obvious effects and can effectively prevent bathroom negative qi from entering the bedroom.

Method 3: Adjust Toilet Position

If the bathroom is in an unfavorable location, consider moving the toilet position. Remember, when relocating the toilet, it absolutely must not be adjacent to the household altar—otherwise it becomes an inauspicious situation.

Method 4: Maintain Dryness and Ventilation

The most basic and important method is to keep the bathroom dry and ventilated. Use dehumidification equipment, keep floors dry, and regularly ventilate.

Bathroom Colors and Decor

Color Selection

Bathrooms often use metal-associated white and water-associated black and blue, creating a calm and serene atmosphere. White represents purity, blue represents tranquility, and black represents steadiness—these colors help create a comfortable bathroom environment.

Floor Materials

Bathrooms generally don’t receive natural light, so floors commonly use granite and other hard, easy-to-clean building materials.

Avoid Static-Producing Textiles

Households should avoid using static-producing shower curtains as they negatively affect energy flow. Natural material shower curtains are more suitable.

Summary

Bathroom Feng Shui is an important aspect of home Feng Shui that cannot be overlooked. Correct bathroom Feng Shui layout can protect family health and enhance the overall fortune of the residence. Remember these key points:

  1. Bathrooms should not be located in the house center, southwest, or northeast
  2. Keep bathrooms clean, dry, and well-ventilated
  3. Toilets should not face main doors; bathroom doors should not face kitchen doors
  4. Bathrooms should not be converted into bedrooms
  5. Place plants or hang energy-balancing items in bathrooms to counter disadvantages

Following these bathroom Feng Shui principles will make your home environment healthier and more harmonious.
